Our family has been working in viticulture and wine growing for several generations. Our two estates, Quinta de S. Mateus and Quinta de Valdazar, are located in Bairrada, central Portugal, close to the Atlantic Ocean. The soils, in our smooth hills (roughly 100 mts.), are mostly limestone and clay. When the grapes, picked and sorted by hand, arrive in the cellar, they are treated according to the old concept but with modern tecnology. Sparkling wine (espumante) is made by second fermentation in the bottle method, used in the region for more than a century.
