About
Craggy Range is focused on becoming one of New Zealand’s great wine producers. As a member of the NZ Fine Wine Classification and the winner of 2017 NZ Winery of the Year from leading NZ wine Writer Bob Campbell MW, we are well on way to achieving this, but continue to focus on improvement and evolution in both farming and winemaking. Thanks to the Peabody Family, we have time to grow as a producer as the family firmly believe in the philosophy of generational guardianship and respect for the land, which is backed by a long term family commitment of 1,000 years.
When Terry Peabody launched Craggy Range in the late 1990’s, a terroir focused approach was employed to select unique parcels of land that would produce wines which spoke of their place. Sites with unique soil types were selected, specific to each variety, ensuring the terroir would be evident in the finished wines.
This lead to the selection of sites in the best wine growing regions of New Zealand. The Gimblett Gravels Vineyard, located in Hawke's Bay on the east coast of New Zealand and the Te Muna Road Vineyard, located just outside of the township of Martinborough on the lower North Island. Te Muna is located roughly seven km’s from the town of Martinborough, and is divided into two terraces the vineyard is focussed on Pinot Noir & Sauvignon Blanc production. The Gimblett Gravels Vineyard in Hawkes Bay is split into 36 varietal blocks that have been matched to the variations in depth and texture of the gravelly soils of the meandering old stream beds of the Ngaruroro River. Here we focus on Syrah, Chardonnay and traditional Bordeaux varietals.
