About
Primary rock meets schist, Loibenberg meets Kögl, and Kremstal meets Wachau. Rainer Wess produces wines from both regions. The winery itself is located in the Sandgrube vineyard in the peripherie of Krems. The majority of the 15 vineyard hectares are located in the Wachau in the Loibenberg vineyard slope or at the foot of the Loibenberg. Together with fruit from vineyards Stein, Kögl and Pfaffenberg, and plots in the Krems vineyards, Weinzierlberg, this is well-travelled winemaker produces a unique spectrum of wines that reflect the geological, climatic and geographic diversity of two prime wine regions. The enterprise began in the year 2003 when Wess leased his first vineyard plots on the Loibenberg slope. He quickly established a reputation for his own particular style: highly elegant wines with crystal clear precision in their expression of origin. To achieve this, he employs two varieties, Riesling and Grüner Veltliner, and strives to bring out their fullest potential. Light, fruit-driven wines find a place in his assortment just as do powerful, intense interpretations and an occasional sweet wine. In just over ten years, Rainer Wess has evolved from a garagist to a fullfledged member of the prestigious vintner association Österreichischen Traditionsweingüter and a respected protagonist of the Wachau. His faithful customers come from 20 countries and the number is growing.
