About
JOHANNISBERG CASTLE - founded around 1100 as a Benedictine monastery. Between 1715 and 1726 newly acquired as the summer residence of the Princes of Fulda, secularised, occupied and administered by Napoleon, and donated to State Chancellor Metternich during the Congress of Vienna in 1816. Riesling cultivation closed since 1720. Since 1775 known as the birthplace of the Spätlese and the ascending grades.
