The Deutzerhof has been one of the leading red wine producers in Germany for many years. This success story is inextricably linked to the name of Wolfgang Hehle, an ex-tax consultant who, together with his wife Hella has really made something of his father-in-law’s winery. Hehle markets most of his Pinot Noir wines as varietal wines, or uses brand names that tend to use family names. The grapes for his wines are grown on the steep slopes of the narrow Ahr valley. The forest growing above the vineyards protects the vines from cold air. Soils, rock formations and vineyard terrace walls of dark slate and grey wacke store the heat of the day, and release it to the vines again at night. The result of this natural underfloor heating with its nightly storage effect is virtually a Mediterranean climate.
