Description

Deep red colour. Very intense and complex aroma dominated by ripe black fruits, blackberries, cassis, floral aromas of violet and some spicy notes that result from “elevage” in the barrels. Also, noticeable aromas of evolution in the bottle, all contributing to further complexity. Dense, concentrated wine with well-balanced acidity, firm and well integrated ripe tannins, and a range of sensations of richness and strength. These characteristics together with intensive retronasal aroma, gives it a long and persistent finish. A wine for ageing.

Vinification

Harvest by hand to small cases of 15 kg. Upon arrival at the winery the grapes originating from old vines are carefully selected and de-stemmed. Pre-fermentative maceration at low temperature with robotized treading in stainless steel “lagares” (troughs) takes place, following fermentation at controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks. Pumping over and “delestage” processes are then started in order to obtain the greatest extraction possible, followed by a long post-fermentative maceration. Ageing in 225 and 300 litres French oak barrels for 24 months (70 % ages in new oak barrels and 30 % in second and third year barrels).

Vineyard

The unique nature of the climate in the Douro is due to its location given that the Marão and Montemuro mountains serve as barriers that protect the region from the humid west winds that blow in from the Atlantic. Located in deep valleys, protected by mountains, the climate in the region is characterized by very cold winters and hot, dry summers.

Soil Type

As far as the origin of the soil is concerned, most of the Demarcated Region, particularly along the Douro River and its tributaries, is schistose with some granite around the edges. Soil: schist - Average vine age: very old vines (some more than 100 years-old)

Viticulture

Training method: Guyot and Royat cord unilateral Exposure: mainly N and NE

Integrated plant protection is a combination of methods which reduces chemical plant protection measures to the absolutely necessary minimum. We only use products that are authorized by the existing legislation.
