Vintage 2018 started with warm and perfect growing conditions for the vines resulting in a record early flowering. Most of the time, the summer was warm and dry, but we also had some heavy rains with some hail resulting in some minor haildamage. The harvest started very early and because of the hail damage, we had to do some intense single berry sorting.
Rivaner 2018
Description
Weingut Karl H. Johner - Flavours of pineapple, with some herbal, floral components (white flowers / lily) and a hint of Mirabelle.
Fresh, juicy, animating, elegant and tasty. On the palate for a Rivaner full-bodied with well balanced acidity. Not resembling a classic Müller-Thurgau.
This wine goes well with salads, starters and asparagus.

Vinification
The grapes were all harvested by hand. In the winery 80% of the Rivaner grapes were destemmed and perfectly selected with our optical sorting machine followed by a manual single berry sorting. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at a temperature of around 18°C.
Vineyard
The Rivaner grows in our cooler sites to capture the wonderful fruit aromas. Some are on high elevated sites, some are also on the bottom of cooler valleys. The soil type is mainly Loess. Our Rivaner is well thinned out during the green harvest to increase the inner quality.
Soil Type
Löß and Löß-loam soil.
Viticulture
The vineyards undergo an intense canopy management by hand, deleafing partly by machine and by hand. Excess grapes are cut off / green harvest.
Maturation
Due to the low yields for a Müller Thurgau in connection with a rather late harvest and a longer storage on the fine yeast (Lees), the shelf life is extremely increased. Also using screw caps with a tin-saran liner is a further advantage. During the first 3-5 years it will retain its current aroma. After that light aromas in the direction of beeswax will develop.
